Tying tip: Be sure not to make the tail too long or you will be prone to get short struck.
Try tying this in some small sizes for panfish and small trout. Bump up the hook size to entice some larger fish and weed out some of the little guys.
Try tying this fly in all colors. Sometimes the crazier the color the better they work!
This is a simple and easy streamer pattern to learn. It is a great fly to learn how to palmer a hackle collar and tie in a hackle tail. This should be one of the first streamers you learn to tie!
This fly works or two reasons: The tail action with the two hackles go crazy when stripped through the water and the hackle on the front create a pulsing and breathing motion that drives fish crazy.
Cast this fly through the current to entice strikes. We often fish them in shallow water to entice fish near the surface but swinging this fly is a great option. You should consider swinging any fly that has a hackle collar! Strip it short and quick to really make the hackle pulse in the water. When swinging the fly cast at a down stream 45 degree angle to the bank and let it pull through the current while keeping the rod tip low and the line tight. The best time to anticipate a strike on the swing is at the end as the fly comes directly downstream of you.
