Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Heavy curved nymph hook or scud hook
  • Thread: Brown UTC
  • Eyes: Gold beadchain eyes
  • Tail: Wooly bugger marabou
  • Legs: White round rubber legs
  • Rib: Small copper wire
  • Body1: Medium root beer cactus chenille
  • Body2: Brown wooly bugger hackle

  • You can use regular chenille or dubbing for this pattern instead of cactus chenille.
  • Use any legs you like

Try tying this one in a few different colors and sizes. Olive and natural colors also work well.

This fly rides hook point up as most carp flies do. This keeps the fly from grabbing on rocky bottoms. This easy to tie fly can be tied cheaply with few materials, use this fly when you’re trying to trick carp into eating flies. The aggressive curve of the hook means that the tail will stick straight up when the eyes are on bottom. This is a great effect as it sticks the marabou up at the fish making it a little more noticeable.

Cast this fly close to tailing carp and let it sink to the bottom. Watch for the fish to flinch towards where the fly landed and set the hook. Or you can very slowly in quick short strips pull the fly toward you. This adds a little movement and action to the fly. Remember that carp aren’t really predators, they don’t chase prey like bass or trout will. Keep the fly as close to where they are feeding and they will eventually eat.
