The wings are really the only part of this fly that are able to be substituted. With so few materials that come together to make a very life like mayfly, it is hard to swap things out without changing how the bug looks or floats.

Wing: Z-Lon or Antron will stand in for Mcflylon if you’re in a bind.

This is a solid pattern for many mayflies. By just changing the colors and proportions you can switch from PMD, to BWO, to trico. Make sure you’ve got all of them in your box for those sporadic mayfly hatches, so that you’ll be able to get some drifts in before they’re all gone.

This bug has a great profile that really does look like a mayfly. No frills or extras, just a plain old mayfly. But hey, that’s what the fish want! Being able to simply switch colors and imitate multiple bugs is a very underrated benefit to this fly. Sitting down at the vise you can easily fill your dry fly box with these guys for any hatch.

These flies are small, and despite the white wing they can still be hard to see. Fishing it in soft water if possible will yield less frustration, and usually more fish. This is also a great bug for mid hatch sight fishing.
