Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Down Eye, Fine Wire, 2X Wide, 2X Short
  • Thread: Veevus 14/0, Dun
  • Tail: Pseudo Hair, Olive
  • Hackle: Whiting High and Dry Rooster Cape, Grizzly
  • Thorax: Peacock Herl
  • Wing: McFlylon, Gray

In the world of extended body flies this is the easy way out. Most extended body flies are difficult, and tedious. There is really only one part of this fly that can be substituted, the rest of the recipe should be followed pretty closely.

Wing: Sparkle Emerger Yarn in Gray can also be used for the wing on this fly if McFlylon isn’t an option.

Changing up the colors to imitate certain insects is the most common way to vary the way this fly is tied. With just slight color changes it can imitate many different mayflies specifically, and in the original color it can just be used as a general mayfly pattern.

Extended body flies can be intimidating to say the least. The technique used to form the extended part of this fly is very easy to deal with, and learn how to do. This bug will also look very anatomically correct on the water, so it’s bound to fool plenty of fish. On top of all of those benefits, the materials are common and reasonably priced. With all of that going for it, and it being easy and quick to tie, there ‘s no reason not to whip up a few of these!

This this fly alone in the smaller sizes, and alone or in a dry dropper in sizes below 14. Fishing it alone, no matter the size, will result in a better drift, and presentation. The extended body of this fly can really ease the fish, they seem to always be eager with them. Keeping your fly line out of the water as much as possible will also aid you in getting a drag free presentation.
