Tying Video
The biggest option to substitute is the body of the fly. There are many types of chenille out there and find some that you like. I have a UV polar dubbing that has really long materials that seem to work great for me and add a lot of body to the fly. This is the standard for tying single-hook streamers and learning this pattern is a must if you want to progress into more streamer patterns.
You can substitute schlappen feathers for the standard bugger hackle too to make a more soft hackle look that creates a wavy body instead of the more rigid fibers in the bugger hackle.
You can mix and match chenille colors and chenille types against the hackle and marabou tail colors to make a huge variety of imitations. From saltwater to steelhead to bass, finding the right color and mix is an art form. I think you could tie enough variety of this fly to stock your entire box for any fish you want to catch anywhere in the world, but most of us will want more variety in the box. That said, I think this fly can get it done anywhere, anytime.
Oh the wooly bugger… Aside from the clouser minnow, I don’t think there is a more versatile pattern in existence. It’s easy to tie and includes a variety of useful techniques used in dozens of other patterns. It is the father of all streamers and catches fish in warm water and cold water in rivers and lakes. You can’t go wrong learning to tie the wooly bugger. Once you’ve mastered it, start adding some variations in colors, flash, and different weights. I could have 2 full boxes of these and probably not need another streamer for anywhere I fish for any freshwater species.
This fly is a standard and can be fished anytime anywhere and you’ll find fish, any fish for that matter. Everything eats a baitfish or two and this imitates both a variety of baitfish or dead drifted to look more like a stonefly.
