Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Short shank, straight eye saltwater hook
  • Thread: FL. Chartreuse UTC 140
  • Eyes: Medium dumbell eyes
  • Body: Pearl flat diamond braid
  • Underwing: Pearl krystal flash
  • Overwing: Chartreuse calf tail
  • Legs: Clear pearl/fl. orange tip crazy legs
  • You can can use craft fur for the overwing
  • Use any flash instead of pearl diamond braid, wrap flashabou, polar chenille, or ice dubbing works well
  • Tie in whatever colors you like. Tan colors would be good for imitating shrimp and sand fleas, the chartreuse works well for catching their eye.

This is about the only fly you need when heading to the flats. Bonefish and permit alike will eat this fly so you need to tie up a bunch of sizes, colors, and weights in these when headed south to the flats. The legs wiggling and the flowing throat with krystal flash is too much to resist. This fly will ride hook-point up keeping it from snagging the coral and grass.

Make sure you pair the weight of the fly with the depth of the water you are in. Cast 6″-1′ in front of a cruising fish. Make sure you have already calculated how long it takes to sink to the bottom. Wait for the fish to get close to the fly and then short quick strips. Think about how a shrimp hops backwards when fleeing, that is the same movement you want your fly to have. Keep a tight line so you can feel subtle takes, give a quick strip set and hold on! Make sure to strip set! Do not raise your rod tip while stripping!
