There are no great substitutions for this pattern. The slender, natural look this fly has about it makes it difficult to change materials without altering the look of the fly too much. All of these materials are extremely useful so it’s well worth grabbing some on your next materiel gathering excursion.
So many species of mayflies mean lots of different variations. The good new is all you need to do is change the colors. BWO and PMD versions are the most popular. Having a few sizes for different pieces of water is crucial as well.
The slender nature of this convincing mayfly emerger is a welcome sight in the eyes of most trout. Mayflies are a staple trout food source, and emergers are extra vulnerable so the fish really look out for them. Slim, natural, and the correct colors are a combination that can’t be beat. This bug is sure to fool a few fish!
The Big Bear Emerger is a fantastic choice for picky trout. Paired with a small midge above or below it and you’ve got a tailwater rig that will blow anything else out of the water. Just make sure to get this fly down with fluorocarbon tippet, split shot, or both if necessary. It needs all the help it can get because it doesn’t have any weight of its own.
