Tying Recipe
  • Hook: 2X Short, Wide Gape, Straight Eye
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Rib: Flashabou, Pearl
  • Tail: Partridge, Natural
  • Body: Light Hare’s Mask Dubbing
  • Collar: Partridge, Natural
  • Thorax: Peacock Herl

This pattern utilizes some pretty common materials, a few of which have substitution options. Other than the materials that have listed substitutions that are recommended, it is best to stick with the recipe as it is written.

Body: Any dubbing that is a similar mix and color will make a fine body on this fly.

Thorax: Peacock Ice Dub Dubbing is a great alternative to the Peacock Herl thorax on this bug if need be.

To imitate the various species of caddis, all you have to do to this fly is change it’s color and size. The color shown in the video is a great go to for regular caddis. For a little black caddis you’ll want to downsize the hook, and switch over to some darker colors. As for the October caddis, you’ll want add some orange to it. Having variations for all three in various sizes should keep you well covered throughout the year.

With such realistic proportions, this fly is sure to fool a fair number of fish for you. The flashabou rib gives a bit of flash that helps the pattern stick out, which definitely adds to it’s effectiveness. It’s just an all around buggy looking, fish catching machine that you need to have in your fly box. The fact that you can just switch colors and sizes and have a completely different species is yet another reason that this bug is an irreplaceable asset.

The Bird of Prey Caddis is a great fly to place in the first spot in your nymph rig. The weight, and flash make it the perfect candidate for a point fly when the caddis are out and about. You can also drop it off of a hefty caddis dry fly for use in a dry dropper setup. Both rigs are very acceptable with this fly, and are highly encouraged.
