Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank, straight eye, saltwater hook
  • Eyes: Dumbbell eyes
  • Tail/Claws: Sand pseudo hair
  • Body 1: Tan EP fiber
  • Body 2: Cactus chenille

Tying tips: use a bodkin or a brush to brush out the fibers before tying in, then again before trimming.

  • You can use zonker strips for the claws.
  • Use any flashy dubbing or chenille for the body.
  • Try some different sizes, weights, and colors (specifically olive).
  • Add in some rubber legs.

Use this fly anywhere fish key in on crabs. This is a great crab pattern because of the way it moves and acts in the water. Tying the eyes on the top of the hook keep the hook point riding up so you stay out of the weeds and mud. The fly has a good fluttering motion while dropping to the bottom, this can be a great time to catch a fish but when it is riding on bottom the claws moving looks just like a crab.

Cast this fly where you can sight fish for bonefish, redfish, or any other species known to eat crabs. As the crab sinks through the water column to the bottom it has a great side to side motion because it’s flat. Try to match this fly to the crabs that live in the area you are fishing. In general use tan colors fishing over sand flats and use olive when fishing over grass. You of course can mix both olive and tan to created an awesome mottled colors. (I highly recommend this)

Tie these in larger sizes for permit and redfish, stick to the smaller sizes when targeting bonefish.
