Luckily, some of the materials used in this fly have very comparable substitutes that can be implemented if you are lacking one of the materials listed in the recipe. Other than the materials listed with substitutions, sticking to the recipe is a wise decision.

Tail: Blood Quill Marabou in Black can also be used for the tail.

Body: Medium Rayon Chenille is a comparable substitute for the Woolly Bugger Marabou that’s called for originally.

Flash: Krystal Flash in a similar color will get the job done as the flashy piece in this fly.

You can play around with infinite amounts of color combinations on this fly. Every single material used comes in a wide variety of colors. Always have multiple choices when you’re fishing this fly. A color change when you’re streamer fishing is sometimes the difference between a great day, and an awful day.

This fly has two of the most important streamer qualities when targeting trout. The first being pulsation, which comes from the marabou. The second is the way this bug pushes large amounts of water when it’s stripped. Those two major factors, plus a little flash, is a recipe for fish in the net. This fly is also extremely durable so you can fish it all day long, so long as you don’t get hung up and break it off!

This fly may need to be fished on a sink tip, or full sink line to get it down to the fish depending on where you’re fishing. If you’re throwing a floating line, loading it up with some sort of weight is probably a good call. Don’t be afraid to dead drift this fly if you aren’t getting any action stripping it.
