There is only one material eligible for substitution on the Bugmeister. Most of them need to be followed pretty strictly to keep the look of the fly correct, but don’t be too worried if you have to switch out the body material.

Body: Any dubbing that will wrap tightly will get the job done. Superfine Dubbing is always a nice choice in a similar color.

This fly being the somewhat general attractor that it is, can be spun up in many different colors as well as sizes. Changing the dubbing color, and hackle color should produce plenty of variety in this pattern for use in many places, and times of year.

When it’s Summertime, and more importantly dry fly season, this pattern is a great all around attractor pattern that is pretty universal. The neutral colors, and realistic dimensions really leave what it imitates up to the imagination of the fish. More often than not the fish will decide it just looks good and smack it!

A classic dry dropper setup is the most common place to find the Bugmeister, but a double dry fly rig where this pattern is your point fly or indicator is another great use for it. Close to the banks or in nervous riffle water is the perfect place to land this fly. It also happens to be an awesome high country creek and high alpine lake bug in the smaller size offerings.
