The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Panfish absolutely can’t resist this pattern when they see it hit the water. It’s a breeze to tie, and despite the short list of materials it does have a possible substitution that won’t affect the productivity of the fly in the least.
Legs: Spanflex Legs, Sili Legs, or any of the other equivalent materials will do just fine.
Color and size are going to be the biggest changes you can make to this fly. Different shades of chartreuse or bright green are usually very effective, but you can also tie it in a wide variety of attractor colors. You can also change up the color of the legs. Grizzly barred legs look pretty nice. You can also add a few pieces of pearl krystal flash on with the rubber legs to give it some added flash.
Bluegill and all of the other types of panfish are a great way to learn to fly fish, have some fun around town, or simmer down after work. Usually not technical to fish for, and pretty easy to tie for the bluegill is a great vacation after the trout kick your butt. This pattern will have those little guys in a feeding frenzy. They won’t be able to resist the movement of the rubber legs going through the water.
Strip this fly on multiple retrieve speeds until you find what the fish seem to be keying in on. A smaller weight rod like a 3 or 4 weight is ideal for fishing to panfish, but will still have enough backbone to turn over this bug. Go have some fun at the local pond!
