Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Do-It 785 #6 Hook or similar jig style hook
  • Bead: Tungsten Beadhead
  • Wire: .020 Lead Wire
  • Thread: UTC 140
  • Claws: Pine Squirrel Zonker
  • Eyes: Cable Tie, Fly Rattle and Parmanent Marker
  • Antennae: Krystal Flash
  • Body & Tail: Coq De Lon with Chicabou Soft Hackle

For larger patterns:

  • Claws: Larger Squirrel Zonker

Different colors are good on this variation and it’s really unique so sticking to the recipe as much as possible is a good idea.  Olive, Black, Brown, Orange and Blue are good.  I like a variation of olive or brown but some blue pine squirrel zonker strips to make the blue claws as often seen on larger crayfish.

This fly is one of the more innovative and realistic looking crayfish patterns. The cable tie, where the fly gets it’s name is the real secret sauce to this fly. It holds the rattle well and is just downright cool. It’s worth tying, but can be a long tie, so take your time and tie for perfection.

Crayfish make quick swimming jerks backwards when fleeing from predators.  The fly is tied backwards for this very reason so when you retrieve it in short twitches, you present it very accurately.  Get the fly nice and deep with a sink tip line and let it skate along the bottom occasionally making short little twitches.  This will cause a lot of strikes and fish in the net.
