Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook #16
  • Bead: Tungsten Slotted 2.8mm silver
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier orange
  • Tail: Coq-de-Leon
  • Body: Veevus body quill orange
  • Rib: UTC ultra wire small black
  • Collar: Hares ear dubbing
  • Hook: Any jig nymph hook will work fine for this pattern. This can also be tied on a standard straight shank nymph hook as well.
  • Bead: Use slotted beads with jig hooks, and standard beads with standard hooks. Tungsten is nice to have to get the fly down as quickly as possible, but brass can work in shallow water as well.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread can work fine for this pattern. The thinner the better and try not to go thicker than 70 denier or 8/0.
  • Tail: Coq-de-Leon is a great tailing material due to its strength. However, pheasant tail or wood duck flank can work just as well, these just will be weaker fibers.
  • Body: Thread bodies can work just as well.
  • Rib: Use any thin round wire that you like.
  • Collar: Use any natural colored dubbing that you like. Squirrel and beaver can be great substitutes.

Like most simple jig nymphs, this can be tied in every color imaginable and any size within reason. #20s to #12s are the size range that you’ll want to stick to. For a buggy collar, try adding a few turns of some CDC or partridge for a great soft hackle. Thread bodies can work great for this fly, and allow for multiple color options as well.

This is just another jiggy perdigon fly in an attractive orange colorway. This can be a great searching fly, as it does resemble mayflies in shape, and the color can be attractive to hungry trout when multiple species are in the water systems. The jig hardware is nice to have, as it allows for the hook point to ride up and away from snags and other things that may come up off the bottom of the river.

Fish this like any other nymph in your fly boxes. This is a great summer time dropper to have hanging off of a dry fly, or a great point fly on a euro or indicator nymph rig. Fish this fly near the bottom of the river, and with a good dead drift for best results.
