Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Perfect Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy, 2X Long
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Weight: .010 Lead Free Wire
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Tan
  • Tail: Pheasant Tail, Natural
  • Body: SLF Whitlock Dubbing, Golden Stone Nymph
  • Casing: Large Mirage Tinsel, Opal
  • Rib: Brassie Ultra Wire, Copper
  • Collar 1: CDC, Brown
  • Collar 2: Grizzly Soft Hackle, Tan

This pattern needs to stay pretty specific to what is called for originally, but there are a few small substitutions that can be made. This fly will catch it’s fair share of fish if it’s tied correctly.

Body: Any similar dubbing that will create a streamlined body in a comparable color will do the trick.

Casing: Wide Pearlescent Tinsel will get the job done on the casing.

Adding some rubber legs like spanflex, or round rubber legs is just about the only thing you can add that this bug doesn’t already have. If you do decide to toss some on there, be sure to leave ample room so they don’t look squished or crowded. Be sure to have multiple sizes, but also different weights of sizes for varying water types and depths.

This fly has a very realistic body, and segmentation. When you add in the flash of the tinsel casing, paired with the movement of the CDC and soft hackle collars it’s just got a little bit of everything going for it. Not to mention the fact that it’s packing some hefty weight to get it down to where the fish are feeding, and where stonefly nymphs usually reside.

Fishing this fly as the first bug in a deeper nymph rig can yield great results. The smaller flies below it will benefit for the weight of the CDC Golden Stone. You can also fish it as a dropper underneath a big stonefly dry, or a hopper. This bug holds it’s own in the weight category, so use it accordingly.
