The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Even though this little stillwater pattern doesn’t utilize many materials, there are a few easy substitution that can be made if necessary. Don’t change out anything if you don’t need to though, this pattern works wonders the way it’s originally tied.
Tail: Any Antron equivalent, such as Zelon, will give the bug a similar look.
Rib: Mostly any flashy tinsel of the correct size will give this fly the right appearance.
Gills: Again, any Antron equivalent, such as Zelon, will give the bug a similar look.
Tying this fly in a few simple color, and size combinations will benefit you tremendously out on the water. The original black and silver combination is the most popular, but don’t be shy to test out a creation of your own. Matching the general color of the bugs in the stillwater area you’re fishing is a great way to catch more fish.
This fly has just the right mix of flash, and realistic qualities. Even though it may look slightly flashy right off the vise the segmentation, wing case, and thorax balance it out nicely. This fly is also much simpler than other chironomid patterns, so there is no excuse to not tie up a bunch of these guys! The materials are also some of the most common things around, so you should probably already have them lying around.
Fishing this fly deep in a stillwater under an indicator is your best bet for results. Just throw it, and leave it! The water will provide the movement necessary to make the fly come to life. Plus, the flash will do it job attracting attention.
