Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard Dry Fly Hook – Down eye, straight shank, perfect bend
  • Thread: UTC 140
  • Body: 1-2mm foam
  • Legs: Barred rubberlegs small – medium round

No real substitutions on this simple pattern

You can variate like crazy on this fly and it’s really the foundation for a ton of foam bodied flies.  This is a great one to master and can be tied in a mix and match of any foam colors for top and bottom with leg color combinations.  Common variations are:

  • Color changes: in foam and legs, mixn’match
  • Hackled Underbody:  In the middle of the fly, you can tie in a hackled underbody for additional bugginess
  • Chubby Chernobyl: McFlyLon elk hair for overwings tied onto the top of the fly

There are two major benefits to this fly. First, the design is the foundation of most foam dry fly patterns and tying these is great practice as this is simple and effective. The Second benefit is the flies versatility. Nearly unsinkable unless pulled down by too much weight, it makes an excellent dry/indicator for a dropper rig below. It requires little maintenance and can catch trout, bass, panfish and even the terrestrial focused carp. This is a fly everyone should know how to tie and have a few in different sizes and colors in your box.

Since it’s unsinkable, you can tie it on and fish it all day with no maintenance.  It works great as a dry/indicator in a dry fly set up with a dropper fly beneath.  You can tie on as heavy or light of a dropper as you want cause it really doesn’t sink.

If you want to just fish it as a hopper or during a stonefly hatch, a single dry fly set up is best and hit the banks and slack water where fish often hold.
