The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
The Chubby Chernobyl is fairly simple material wise. This bug has a specific look for more reasons than one. It’s an instant classic, and should be a mainstay in anyone’s dry fly box.
This big piece of foam trout candy looks great in all different colors, and that is about the only variation necessary to this highly effective pattern. Cutthroat love a big black and purple Chubby. Another great variation is the old fashioned royal red/green combination with dark brown foam.
The profile and leg placement on this fly make it hard to resist for all the summer time trout looking up for a big meal. Not to mention this guy floats like a cork, and is made to soak up a bunch of floatant. This makes it a great pattern to use as an indicator on a dry dropper or a double dry type rig. The various color combinations also mean that no matter where you are, if stones or hoppers a present, you’ll most likely be able to find a color that will woo the fish into your net!
A big factor in having good success with this bug is making sure it’s floating. That sounds arbitrary, but it’s super important. Applying floatant the night before, while rigging up at the car, or even 5 minuets before fishing it can be extremely helpful in the long run. That will give the fly time to absorb the floatant, and dry off. As far as rigs go this is a go to dry dropper fly in the summer months. Using it as your indicator on a double dry fly rig with a smaller, more natural bug behind it can also be effective. If you only want big, explosive eats, snip everything else off and just toss this bad boy around solo for the day.
