Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Curved nymph hook
  • Weight: .020 Non-toxic wire
  • Tail: Tan zonker rabbit strip
  • Tail Flash: Krystal flash
  • Body: Dubbing from hares mask
  • Rib: Gold tinsel
  • Casing: Peacock hearl
  • Thorax: Dubbing from hares mask
  • Legs: Partridge
  • You can use any dubbing for the body but stick to a nymph dubbing.
  • You can use hen hackle or any soft hackle instead of partridge
  • Use gold wire instead of tinsel if you want, you could even use gold flashabou.
  • Rubber legs look great on this fly!

This fly works because of the movement throughout the entire fly. The tail, partridge legs, and even the spiky dubbing have great movement. This fly is very versatile, you can tie it in small sizes for small creeks and up to a big size on the biggest of western trout rivers. This fly can be used as a nymph or as a streamer. Stoneflies are one of the few nymphs we imitate that are able to swim (although not well). This allows you to add movement to a fly while still maintaining a natural presentation.

Get this fly deep through deep rifts and near structure. Use this fly as a heavy nymph or as a streamer. You can fish this fly on the swing, stripping, or dead drifting it. Stoneflies live on the bottom, not in the water column, this means that you need to get this fly deep. If you’re not near the bottom this fly will not work. Cast near structure and deep currents to catch hungry fish.
