Tying Video
As you can see, this fly on has two materials, the thread and the deer hair! For that reason alone it’s essentially impossible to have any substitutions on this simple, little bug. The good news is that it’s easy, and quick to tie!
The only variations that really exist for this bug are color, and size changes because of it’s simple nature. Any natural colors such as brown or tan would compliment the black ones nicely in your box. Depending on where you’re fishing, different sizes can be a savior, and really turn your day around.
The best aspect of this pattern is by far the ease of tying, and minimal materials. You can really crank these flies out for a minimal cost. The bug also floats very well because of the deer hair. It may be slightly hard to see sometimes, but it makes up for that with how lifelike it is. Even picky fish will rarely refuse!
Fishing this fly in a double dry fly rig is very productive in a river setting. A bigger attractor dry in front can make this bug much easier to keep track of. On a stillwater, such as a high alpine lake, you can get away with fishing it alone, just keep a close eye on it!
