Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Perfect Bend, Down Eye, 2X Heavy, 2X Long
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Red
  • Tail: Mallard Flank, Wood Duck
  • Rib: Small Ultra Wire, Silver
  • Thorax: Peacock Herl
  • Wings: Midge Krystal Flash, Pearl
  • Collar: CDC Feather, Tan
  • Head: Hare’s Ear Dubbing

This streamlined attractor pattern calls for specific materials for a reason. Following the recipe is extremely important, but there is one one exception. Achieving the slim profile of this fly is imperative.

Tail: Wood Duck Flank Feather fibers will also work in place of the Mallard.

A pheasant tail version is a popular variation of this bug. Just use a few pheasant tail fibers for the body instead of creating a thread body. Other than that you can experiment with different color combinations of thread and wire. Have different sizes for different water will pay off when you get out on the water.

The Delektable Lil’ Spanker mostly imitates mayflies, but this pattern can also pass for a caddis or stonefly if tied in the appropriate colors and sizes. This bug has all the right ingredients for a successful attractor pattern, and has continued to prove itself. The movement the CDC provides is a major key to the convincing look of this fly. The small bit of Krystal Flash really helps the fish key in on this fly when it is in faster, and/or dirty water.

This may be one of the ultimate searching patterns we’ve seen in a while. In unfamiliar water make sure to have multiple sizes of this fly. It is most at home in a nymph rig or as a general dropper under a dry fly. If you have a hopper tied on go ahead and put one of these little dudes underneath it. No matter where you are, it’s bound to attract some attention.
