Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #14
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 3.5mm nickel
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier fluorescent orange
  • Tail: Pheasant tail natural
  • Rib: Uni soft wire small black
  • Body: Pheasant tail natural
  • Wing: CDC feather plumes natural
  • Thorax: Hares ear dubbing
  • Collar: Thread collar sealed with head cement
  • Hook: Any standard jig hook will work fine. This fly can also be tied on a standard nymph hook as well. If tying on a standard hook, consider a down eye.
  • Bead: Slotted beads are needed for jig hooks. Standard beads will work for standard nymph hooks.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work fine. Go as thin as you want, but try not to go over 8/0 or 70 denier. Use the color thread that you want the hot spot to be.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is great, but if you want something with a little more strength, use Coq-de-Leon.
  • Rib: Any small round wire will work great.
  • Body: A thin dubbing body can replace pheasant tail.
  • Wing: A few strands of polypropylene or antron can replace CDC.
  • Thorax: Choose your favorite natural dubbing here. Be sure to leave the guard hairs in for extra bugginess. Squirrel and beaver dubbing are great substitutes.
  • Collar: Thread collar. Use your favorite head cement.

Like most jig flies, you can tie this jig in any color to match whatever forage is in your local system. For a more effective soft hackle collar, try wrapping a turn or two of some partridge to give it some more bugginess. For a really buggy body, use some medium to long fibered dubbing for the body, and use a bodkin to tease the fibers from the wire rib.

This is a great hot spot emerger to fish during high or murky water conditions. This is very similar to the euromerger that Jake has, but with a hot spot to catch the fishes eye a little more in lower water quality. The jig hardware allows this fly to be fished with ease on the bottom of the river, catching more trout than snags off the river bottom.

This is a versatile fly that can be fished with ease like any other nymph. Fish it as the lead or the trailer on an indicator rig, as the point fly on a euro nymph rig, or as the dropper on a dry dropper. If fishing off of a dry, give the fly a few more inches of tippet to be sure the fly gets to the bottom, especially early mornings when the hatches are just getting started.
