Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Allen J100BL or Equivalent
  • Bead: Slotted Tungsten Bead
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Wire: UTC Small Wire
  • Dubbing: UV Polar Ice Dubbing
  • Tail and Over Body:  Goose Biots
  • Legs: Spanflex Legs

The only required material is goose biots to make the back and tail all at the same time, all the rest can be subbed out if needed though the original recipe is preferred.

  • Hook: You can tie this pattern without a jig style hook just the same.
  • Bead: If you aren’t going jig style, then a brass or tungsten countersunk bead works best to put as much weight as possible on the fly
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread or UTC 140 denier for flies under size 10
  • Wire: UTC Small Wire to medium wire depending on hook size
  • Dubbing: Any dubbing will work, but a UV type seems to work best.
  • Legs: Rubber legs of any kind will do

This is a quick and easy pattern to tie once you get the biots down.  Then with different colors you can imitate all stoneflies.  Black and grey colors for salmonfly nymphs, brown and chocolate colors for brown stones etc.  The key on the variations is to make the biots darker than the dubbing.  Stoneflies have a lighter colored underbelly and their tops are darker. This is true for nearly all stonefly nymphs, so make that a standard as you variate on this pattern.

The Euro golden biot stone is an impressionistic stonefly pattern imitating small to medium sized golden stonefly nymphs. This pattern is great for two reasons. One, you can tie it in a wide range of sizes to match the stones in your river. Secondly, realistic stoneflies have a very two toned body, and tying a biot back and dubbing underside really helps imitate that coloration.

This fly fishes well in early spring to early summer.  As the water warms up, the snow melts and the waters get a little murky.  The UV dubbing helps the fly get found in these waters as stoneflies use the cover of the murk to move to the shallows to molt before the climb out of the water to hatch.

If you’re using a jig-style as the recipe suggests for euro-nymphing, then placing this as your middle fly in a 3 fly rig works great.  If you can only do 2 flies, then make it the point fly (bottom fly) and that will work best.
