You can change up the colors of the lets, body and head/thorax in order to achieve different colors. This pattern works well to imitate a golden stone, but black would be good for a smaller salmonfly and tan would be good for a caddis and green for a mayfly and so on. Pick your favorite colors and see how it produces.
Any euro nymph is going to ride hook point up, get deep and often be impressionistic in design. This fly when fished with an indicator or euro nymph rig, gets in the strike zone fast regardless of water type. Another benefit of this fly is its ability to be tied up to a size 18 or even 20. Most stonefly nymphs just don’t get that small because the design prohibits it, but this can get down to those sizes imitating smaller stones like a yellow sally or juvenille skwala, golden and yellow sally stoneflies.
The pattern is a euro nymph and it’s best fished that way. Jig style flies are great regardless of how you fish them, but when you don’t use an indicator you can fish fast water that is often overlooked because your flies don’t get hit with as much drag due to the indicator being on fast water. Stonefly nymphs are often residing in fast water to take advantage of the oxygen and food available to them and when they get dislodged, they are poor swimmers and trout key in on that often eating them in riffles or tops of holes as the fast water moves in. Euro rigs get a fly down in the strike zone faster and long and more naturally. Try fishing this fly without an indicator in a 2 or 3 fly configuration as the middle or point fly.
