Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Allen J100BL
  • Bead: Slotted Tungsten Bead
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Wire: UTC Small Wire
  • Tail: White Partridge Feather Fibers or Coq de Leon
  • Dubbing: Polar Dubbing
  • Hook: As with all jig styles, you can sub in a standard hook and bead to make it a standard nymph
  • Bead: If you go non-jig-style, then a countersunk tungsten or brass beadhead is preferred in gold or black nickel
  • Thread: UTC 70 Thread
  • Wire: You can sub in white UTC 70 thread to wrap and segment the body like the original recipe calls for.  I think wire helps it sink better.
  • Tail: White Partridge Feather Fibers or Coq de Leon
  • Dubbing: Polar Dubbing or any dubbing that has flash to it

Since it’s a mayfly nymph, you can variate the colors to match any mayfly nymph you wish to imitate.  Just adjust size and color.

The euro iron lotus variant is a spin off of the popular iron lotus pattern. This pattern uses heavier materials and a tungsten beadhead on a jig-style hook in order to fish deeper and work well with the ever increasing popularity of euro nymphing.

I usually fish this as the middle fly in a 3 fly rig or the point fly in a 2 fly rig.  Don’t be afraid to let this fly skate to the surface at the end of a drift to imitate an emerger.  It can work well that way too.
