Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Allen J100BL #10 – #20
  • Bead: Slotted gold tungsten
  • Wire: .015 Lead-Free Round Wire
  • Thread: UTC 70 Red or Pink
  • Tail: Coq De Leon or Pheasant Tails
  • Wire: UTC Brassie Wire Gold
  • Body: Pheasant Tail Fibers
  • Thorax Dubbing: UV Pink Ice Dub

While you can substitute colors of materials on this fly, there aren’t really any other substitutions available for this fly beyond the dubbing color and thread color.

You can mix and match colors easily to make a variety of options.  I do well with blue, red, black and purple though I’m sure many work.  I’m not sure if thread color matters too much overall, but it builds confidence for us as anglers in fly selection so experiment until you get what you’re looking for.

Adding a jig style to the rainbow warrior pattern is getting dangerously close to powerbait and the fish can’t seem to resist it. This fly gets down deep, and the jig style keeps it from getting hung up and it catches a ton of fish. When I teach people how to euro nymph, this is usually my point fly because it builds confidence fast and it lands a lot of fish. Tie a few up, you won’t be dissapointed.

Fish it deep and at the end of the drift, let it skate to the surface.  It usually works best as either the top fly in the 3 fly rig or as the point (last) fly in a 2 fly rig.  Fish it often and beginner euro nymphers should put this on their top to tie list.
