Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook
  • Bead: Tungsten slotted bead 3mm
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier olive
  • Tail: Saddle hackle fluff fibers olive
  • Rib: Small wire olive
  • Body: Strung marabou olive
  • Collar: Peacock herl
  • Hook: Jig hooks are preferred, but this can be tied on a standard hook. Consider using a down-eye hook.
  • Bead: Use a slotted bead for a jig hook, standard bead for a standard hook.
  • Thread: Any thin thread will work. Go as thin as you like, but try not to go over 8/0 or 70 denier. Match the color with the body.
  • Tail: Any fluffy, soft fibers will work. Marabou works best, but craft fur can work here as well.
  • Rib: Wire works best here as it makes the fly durable. Without it, the marabou along the body will break easily.
  • Body: Use any marabou type. With the fly being so small, the length of the fibers doesn’t matter as much.
  • Collar: Use anything you want as a collar here. Dubbing is a great alternative.

Asides from the multiple color variations with different color beads, dubbing or marabou, you can always add materials to get the exact fly that you want. Consider counter wrapping some UTC mirage opal tinsel for a bit more flash on the body. Use some long fibered dubbing like arizona simi-seal in a dubbing loop for a more stringy collar, or just add a partridge feather for a soft hackle for the same effect.

This little pattern is a great attractor and search fly that represents not only bugs, but leeches and small baitfish as well. This is a great fly for low clear water, and won’t spook fish that are on edge in shallow water. It can be sized down as small as a #16 or as large as a #12 and tied in multiple color combinations for any situation. Fish it in cool water for trout, or warm water for panfish and even bass!

With the size of this little jig, it is almost impossible to fish wrong. You can strip retrieve it like a normal streamer, euro nymph it, put it under an indicator, or even under a dry fly. Dead drift it, swing it, strip it, just make sure the fly is in the water and it’ll work!
