Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Tail: Grizzly zonker
  • Body: Minnor belly ice dubbing
  • Collar: Red schlapen
  • Head: #6 fish skull fish mask
  • Eyes: 6MM living eyes
  • You can use any flashy body wrap instead of dubbing. Ice chenille, flashabou, or pearl diamond braid will work.
  • Use hackle if you don’t have schlapen for the collar.
  • Use any eyes you like.
  • Use a weighted fish skull to get deep.
  • Try adding more flash to the tail flashabou would work best.
  • Use any color combo you like. I recommend olive/white, white and red, and natural and white.

This easy to tie fly is a great baitfish pattern. This fly has great movement thanks to the zonker strip, hackle collar, and dubbing. The zonker strip movement entices strikes, its a cheap material, and can be purchased in any color under the sun. Pick a zonker strip that looks similar to the baitfish in your fishery. The fish skull mask is an easy and effective way to finish a fly.

Keep this fly in the strike zone. Tie some with a fish skull if you plan to fish this fly in deeper water or pair the fish mask with a sinking fly line to get it to the right depth. Keep this fly near structure, cover, over hangs, and cut banks to find an ambush predator. Using these techniques you can find some big fish waiting for a snack.
