Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Down Eye, 1X Fine, Wide Gape
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Tail: 2 Flourofiber Strands
  • Body: Superfine Dubbing, Black
  • Casing: 2mm Foam, White

Only one good substitution really exists for the Foam Wing RS2. Other than that one materiel, staying true to the original recipe will yield the best fly, and therefore the best results on the water.

Tail: Mayfly Tails will give this fly a similar look, and not take away from the durability of the pattern.

You can tie this fly in just about any color that Superfine Dubbing is made in. Some popular colors are black, brown, olive, and grey. Match a color to your local mayflies, and you’ll be well on your way to more fish in the net. Having various sizes is also helpful when you get into technical flies like this one.

The biggest upside of this fly is being able to fish it in so many different scenarios. Fish it as an emerging mayfly, or as dry fly suspended in the film. Take your choice! This bug is so versatile the choices are endless. It is such a realistic representation of a mayfly that no fish should even come close to refusing it. Sometimes it’s even fished as a midge, or other insects because of it general buggy appearance.

Fishing this pattern as the first fly in a nymph rig, or under a dry fly is your best bet for success. As an emerger you’ll want to have it closer to the surface so that it looks as if it’s rising to the top of the water column. If you end up fishing it as a dry fly, just put a generous amount of floatant on it, and fish it partially suspended in the film for the best results.
