Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Mustad 9672 Streamer Hook
  • Bead/Cone: Large Tungsten Conehead
  • Wire: .020 lead free wire
  • Thread: 140 Denier in Black
  • Tail: Dyed Artic Fox Fur
  • Body: Ice Dub in 2-3 mixed colors
  • Tools: Hackle pliers, Ruler, A heavy book with shiny cover and plastic chip clip
  • Cement: Z-ment or similar head cement
  • Dubbing Wax

You can substitute different colors to mix and match for a variety of imitations for the baitfish in your area.

Tail substitutions can be made using marabou if you don’t have Arctic Fox Fur, but given it’s the primary ingredient around the name, the fox fur is preferred.

Variations:

Variate by changing the color combinations or the hook style/bead style options. Tie on an intruder hook, jig style hook or turn it into a balanced leech style pattern.

The key benefits to this pattern is its simplicity in materials. You don’t need to buy a lot to get a lot out of this fly. In darker, murkier waters, this fly and the flash it provides really turns on the fish’s predatory instincts and can make the difference on days where water quality suffers.

Fish on dark days or cloudy waters to help fish key in on this pattern.  We have a list of ways we recommend fishing streamers for trout that can be found here.

Make sure to vary your speed of retrieval as well as how many strips or pauses you take on the retrieve.  Pay attention to the changes you make and when you start to find fish, repeat your success with that version of your retrieve.
