This pattern can suggest many different insects, and has a pretty basic list of materials. The substitutions on this bug are plentiful. Get to work on some of these guys next time you’re sitting down at the vise!

Tail: Amber Turkey Biots are a very sufficient substitute.

Wing Case: Thin Skin in a similar mottled color will do the trick for this area of the fly.

Legs: Any Tan Hackle Fibers can do the job for the legs of this bug.

This fly has an endless number of color variations. Most of the materials on this fly come in a variety of colors. This bug is already such a flashy attractor pattern that some crazy color combos won’t hurt a thing. It can also be a solid idea to go all black, or a black body with a colored rib for a more realistic variation of this pattern. Other than color variations, you can swap the hen saddle out for spanflex, sexi floss, or a small size of round rubber legs. That can be a real game changer.

Don’t know what the bug activity in the water you’re fishing is like? Fish being uncooperative? Either situation is the right time to pull out this fly. This bug boasts a seriously killer attractor quality, but has realistic proportions to back it up. Sealing the deal is the name of the game for this fly. Don’t be surprised if a fish moves a decent distance to smack this one. It’s got a simple material list, and can be just about whatever you want it to be, or rather whatever the fish wants it to be.

This is a great point fly for a nymph rig. If you choose to fish it that way, a tungsten bead for extra weight is highly recommended. It will help get your other bugs down quickly, and efficiently. The flash will attract the fish to your rig, and even if they don’t eat the point fly, they may be interested in one of the others. Gabriel’s Trumpet can also be a killer dropper in a dry dropper rig. A lighter, brass bead is recommended for that type of rig because it will help to keep the dry fly from being sunken.
