You can change out peacock herl for other colors of superfine dry fly dubbing and get a variety of colors created in this way.
While it’s a simple pattern, changing the body color with superfine dubbing and the hackle color will be enough of a variation in this fly without changing it completely. See color/size suggestions below.
The simplicity of this fly and flexibility to fish it swung like a wet fly or as a dry fly to technical trout makes for a deadly simple fly that catches a ton of fish. This fly does particularly good on pressured tailwaters with everyone trying the latest and greatest fly to get an edge, the oldies are overlooked. You can also tie this fly small which works well on tailwaters as well.
Fish this fly swung or dead drifted on the surface for the best success. If you’re having trouble seeing the fly, use a small nz strike indicator or a second, more visible, dry fly as the first fly.
If you’re fishing the gallagher as a midge, use a BWO pattern up front or caddis up front based on the season so you can imitate a variety of insects in the same drift and then adjust as needed based on success.
