Tying Video
You can almost never go wrong with chenille and round rubber legs. Those are some of the most useful materials in fly tying. The chenille is irreplaceable in this pattern, but the rubber legs can certainly be switched out for a number of other materials.
Legs: The Round Rubber legs can easily be replaced with Spanflex, Sexi Floss, Crazy Legs, or any of the other equivalent materials. Just make sure the size and colors are correct for the fly you’re tying.
This pattern itself is somewhat of a variation, but it’s a drastic enough change that it really is it’s own fly. Although it gets the stage as it’s own bug, the variations tend to be the same as a traditional Pat’s Rubber Legs. The chenille color can be switched out, as can the color of the legs. There are endless combinations. Depending on the type of stoneflies in the area you’re fishing you’ll want to vary size and color accordingly.
The main attraction to this fly is the weight, and how fast it gets down in the water column; hence the name. It’s heavy set nature isn’t the only thing it has going for it though. The extended body on this fly gives it some great in water movement, and helps it more closely resemble a real stonefly nymph. As always, rubber legs are hard to beat no matter what fly they’re tied onto. This bug can make for a great day when you’re dealing with big water.
Talk about a killer fly to lead a nymph rig with. The weight of this bug will drag down whichever other flies you tie below it with no issues at all. Most of the time it will eliminate the need for split shot. It’s no secret that fish love the original Pat’s Rubber Legs, but this guy raised the bar. This bug is a stellar choice for runoff, and naturally big water alike. It will be your friend in off color water any time of the year as well.
