Aside from hoook, bead and thread substitutions, there is no real substitutions on this pattern.
This is a variation of a black beauty or zebra midge for the most part. Using the glow in the dark flashabou as a wing case over the dubbed head is the key.
The glow midge is a variation of the zebra midge that brings attention to the fly in dark waters and deep holes. The glow in the dark materials bring a different look to the fly underwater and has a knack for finding fish.
This is a great winter fly or deep hole fly. A small little bit of glow material gets fish going sometimes and I have great luck when the fishing is slow with this pattern. Fish it as the point fly in any rig you choose or as a dropper off the rig line.
