This pattern has a couple of substitution options, but should be tied as closely to the recipe as possible. Being true to the recipe usually yields the best results, and that’s not just with this fly, but most flies.

Antennae: Brown Turkey Biots in a similar size will do the trick for this part of the bug.

Tail: Brown Turkey Biots in a similar size will do the trick for this part of the bug.

Spring time and high water means big, nasty bugs like this one. With a few species of stones showing up around the same time, you’ll want a few color options in this fly when you hit the river. Golden brown, rust, and black are some of the most popular colors to tie this fly in. The hare’e dub does a killer job of grabbing the attention of fish. Have an array of sizes on each color as well.

The Hare’e Stonefly Nymph ‘s most notable attribute is the dubbing that it’s named for. The hare’e dub is a stellar material for these big trout snacks that we call stoneflies. The in water movement and color is unmatched by any other material. This bug is also as heavy as an anvil, so you can really get it down in those high spring flows with limited visibility. The fish may not be able to see to much at that time of year, but they’d have to really try to miss this bug.

This fly is a nymph rig champion. Fished as the first bug in the rig it will help weigh down the rest of the flies and get them into the zone, while also assisting in attracting the attention of the fish to your rig. This fly should be fished as close to the bottom as possible. It should be one of the first bugs you grab from your box next Spring.
