The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Leeches can save the day when the fish seem to be inactive, especially on tricky stillwater fisheries. This guy is simple to tie, with a little bit of practice, and uses some common materials. Although most of these materials are easy to come by, only one has a substitute that will look good on this fly.
Flash: Copper Krystal Flash can make for a good Flashabou substitute on this fly.
The color of the pine squirrel most often dictates the color of the rest of the fly, but don’t be afraid to mix and match as you see fit. Changing up the color of the wire is also a great way to vary the way this bug looks. The colors that get most of the attention from anglers, and fish, are olive and natural.
This leech pattern is a renaissance man in the world of flies. It can be applied in many situations, in different colors, different sizes, and different fishing styles. It should also be pointed out that the material list is very limited, and easily attainable. Chances are you already have this stuff sitting at your bench! Versatility, and ease make this fly stand out among the crowd of leech patterns available today. Not to mention the pulsation that the pine squirrel provides as this fly is stripped, or drifted.
This fly has so many uses it seems unbelievable. You can fish this fly as a single streamer, as the second fly in a double streamer rig, or as a point fly in a nymph rig. When fishing it alone or as the second fly in a double streamer rig, tie it on with a loop know for increased movement. If you’re nymphing, make sure that you’ve got a tungsten bead or some kind of weight to get the whole rig into the zone quickly. Try fishing this bug in all of these fashions, one of them is bound to work!
