The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Mainly switching dubbing colors or soft hackle fiber colors will make this fly look different in colors. You can also change bead colors from gold or get large czech glass beads that look like an air bubble which is a cool concept.
Soft hackle plus hares ear dubbing is just a proven recipe for success. The inventive wrapping over of the bead helps keep the soft hackle as the prominent outer profile. This fly sinks well and has a lot of movement making it a great impressionistic search pattern. You get a free license to use as many monty python jokes while fishing this fly too and your friends can’t get mad. Bring on the shrubberies and herrings!
I really like fishing this in a 3 fly euro rig as the middle fly or point fly. Fish really seem to like this pattern and it seems that even if they don’t eat this fly, they eat the flies it’s with so it functions both as an attractor and as a contender to fool the trout. As with most nymphs and soft hackles, getting it down deep for the drift in the strike zone is key and then at the end of the drift, let this fly skate up to the surface.
If fishing stillwaters, a slow, twitchy retrieve at whatever depth the fish are feeding is the best method.
