Tying Tips: Don’t put too much pressure on the thread with the foam or else you can cut it. Use a large enough thread so it won’t so straight through foam. Practice a few times on a bare hook to see how much pressure it takes to cut it. Use zap a gap to help hold the thread wraps.
Mouse patterns are great for searching for big fish. Large trout will expend plenty of energy to catch a big mouse because it will be a big meal. The zonker or chinchilla body flows just like mouse fur in the water while the foam keeps the fly afloat. The chenille tail adds some more movement and adds to the profile of the fly.
Cast these late in the evening or at night to get strikes from big fish. We cast mouse patterns toward the banks and strip them toward the middle of the river. The objective is to land it as close to the bank as possible at about a 45 degree angle downstream. Then work the fly upriver as a mouse would swim toward the middle of the river. Strikes will come hard and fast but you must keep working the fly until you feel the pressure of the fish. Use quick short strips to work the fly and let the current hep you bring it down river. Keep a tight line and hold on.
