Though this is an Isonychia mayfly imitation in the video, you can change colors to imitate any of the greater drake mayflies that are size #14 or bigger. Green drakes and Hex mayflies are both great options for variations. Trade olive and yellow for the rusty maroon color in the video and you’re in business.
Iso mayflies hatch for a long time in summer and they always seem to be somewhat present on the river. For this reason, they make a great dry fly for a dry dropper because fish will jump on them even outside of an active hatch. This fly floats high and dry making it low maintenance to fish and a lot of fun. The elk hair post is super helpful in creating a high floating dry fly.
As mentioned above, using this fly as a dry dropper is a great way to hunt for fish even outside of an active ISO hatch. This fly can just as easily look like a hopper as it could a mayfly and generally attracts fish. A copper john or hares ear is a great dropper fly 18- 36 inches below the Iso Iso Baby dry fly.
