Tying Video
This is a super effective midge pattern, so we want to be careful not to mess it up by incorporating materials that will change it’s appearance. This is an easily attainable goal if you stick to the recipe, and if need be this substitution.
Tail: Hackle Fibers in a similar color to the Pheasant Tail will do a fine job as a stand in if they are called upon.
Having different colors and sizes can be a game changer on the water, especially on those tougher days when the fish just aren’t cooperating. some popular colors you should be sure to include when tying it yourself are olive, brown, and grey. Don’t be afraid to mix and match those dubbing and thread colors either, there are some cool combos out there.
The Johnny Flash is a super simple pattern that is easy to tie, and loves finding fish! It’s slim body, defined head, and flash wings make it a realistic, yet attention getting pattern. Having those two characteristics in sync is a difficult feat, but this bug is a fantastic example. It should have a spot in everyone’s midge box.
Fishing this fly in your smaller sizes like 20 and 22 can yield incredible results. Picky tailwater fish, and midge munching freestone fish alike will likely be fooled by this pattern.
