Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Curved shank, straight eye nymph hook
  • Thread: 10/0 Veevus Thread or 70 Denier Thread
  • Body: Three strands of super hair or slinky fiber
  • Head: Flouro Fiber
  • Head: Antron or Darlon or Z-lon synthetic materials

You can variate a lot on colors here and we’ll mention our favorite color options below in the colors section.  Adding a pheasant fiber for tail or similar tail material makes it a juju baetis imitation which is also popular.  You can also add some tinsel or flashabou to the wing casing to make it flash even more. Common variations are:

  • Color Variations: Olive/Black, Red/Black, Yellow/Black, Black/White but any variation is good
  • Baetis Variation: Add a pheasant tail or hung partridge fiber tail to the pattern to imitate small mayflies
  • Flashback Variation: Adding tinsel or flashabou over the top of the wing casing gives more flash and a more pronounced wing casing.

The biggest benefit of this fly is it’s ability to be tied so small and still look good. It’s easy to variate colors and keep a slim profile which allows you to imitate a variety of small midge and mayfly nymphs especially on tailwaters. The super hair is awesome and really makes good segmentation without over adding weight or bulk with wire making it a great small pattern fly. Props to Charlie Craven for inventing the fly.

Make this the point fly whenever you fish it.  While it works find in other positions I’m sure, I’ve had best luck when it’s the last fly in the rig.  It drifts better and you can drift it to the surface as it can also imitate an emerger.
