Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight Eye, 3X Wide, 2X Short, Curved Shank
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, White and Black
  • Tail: Partridge, Natural
  • Body: 2x Super Hair, White / 1x Super Hair, Black
  • Casing: Small Mirage Tinsel, Opal
  • Legs: Flourofibre, White

A decent amount of worthy substitutions exist for this ultra realistic pattern. Usually we hesitate to replace materials on patterns with few materials that have been finely tuned, but this fly has some wiggle room.

Tail: Mallard Flank also looks fantastic as a tail on this bug.

Casing: Pearl Flashabou can be second in line to the tinsel, and looks nice as well.

Legs: Flourofibre works best, but Antron will also get the job done with a similar appearance.

Variations of this bug in size and color are the most common because it can easily be morphed to fit different insects such as BWO’s, PMD’s, and midges. Match the correct color to the size of the insects in the the chosen water, and you’ll have fish begging for more! Charlie Craven really out did himself coming up with this bad boy.

This fly is an instant confidence fly for any fly angler on water that may be new, technical, or both. Imitating a wide variety of bugs that are relevant most of the year makes it a great choice in many situations. The easy nature of tying it in many different variations also makes it a not so daunting task to tie in multiple sizes and colors. The small flashy casing gives this bug that extra push from an okay fly to an epic fly that will not only move the fish, but trick it into eating as well.

This is one of the best patterns you can trail behind a small dry fly when fishing the film in an eddy or slow, calm water where the fish might be wary of a dry fly. It also holds it’s own in a nymph rig as a first fly in a larger size, or a trailer fly in a smaller size. Versatile flies like the Jujubaetis should have a home in your fly box to tackle all kinds of fishing situations.
