Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Down Eye, Heavy Wire, 6X Long
  • Weight: .020 Lead Free Wire
  • Thread: UTC 140 Denier, Tan
  • Tail: Goose Biots, Tan
  • Body: SLF Whitlock Dubbing, Golden Stone Nymph
  • Rib: D-Rib, Medium Dark Golden Stone
  • Wing Case: Mottled Turkey Feathers
  • Antenna: Goose Biots, Tan

This pattern has a decent amount of materials that are interchangeable with close substitutions. Besides the materials listed, staying on track with the recipe will keep your bugs looking slick, and most importantly catching fish.

Tail: Turkey Biots in Tan will serve you well if you don’t have Goose Biots.

Rib: Micro Stretch Tubing in a similar color will get the job done.

Antenna: Again, Turkey Biots in Tan will serve you well if you don’t have Goose Biots.

The Kaufmann Stone can be tied in any color you wish to use, but black, brown, and the original golden color are the most popular and useful. Tying the fly in a wide variety of sizes, and colors will cover most stonefly species. You could also add some rubber legs with Spanflex if you wanted something with a bit more movement.

This pattern has some major weight behind it that helps it get down to the bottom where the stones come out to play. Along with being heavy enough to get down to the fish, it has a crazy realistic wingcase. The d-rib gives it some much needed durability so the bug doesn’t fall apart after a few fish commit to it. They may be slightly time consuming on the vise, but it’s worth it out on the river!

Fishing this bug as close to the bottom as possible will yield the best results. It has plenty of weight on it so it should get down with no issues. It’s also a great bug to weigh down a nymph rig, getting your less weighted bugs to the bottom as quickly as possible. When fishing this fly in high water it tends to move it’s fair share of fish.
