Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer
  • Body: Red thread
  • Rib: Tinsel
  • Back: Bucktail
  • Collar: White hackle fiber
  • Use any hook you like
  • Use any ribbing you have, wire, tinsel, or a different color thread works
  • Use any color thread you have
  • Use any color bucktail
  • Use any hackle you have
  • This fly works well with a marabou tail
  • Add some flash under the wing
  • Add a bead head or wire wrap the shank to get it down

This simple streamer has good movement, is easy to tie, and produces fish. The bucktail moves in the water like a baitfish, the collar breathes well like fins or gills, and the contrasting body creates bulk. Cast this fly with any weight rod you like and watch your friends be jealous.

It sometimes seems like the best panfish flies are also the simplest flies. This is a perfect example! Cast near logs, stumps, rocks, or overhangs and slowly strip the fly out.

When trout fishing with this fly cast near the bank and swing the fly next to the bank and through pools. You can use this fly as a nymph below an indicator with some split shot to get it deep. You can put some movement into the fly if you want under an indicator. Create a jigging motion if you want by throwing small upstream mends into the line just enough to bob the indicator.
