Tying Video
You don’t have to have holo tinsel, thread as the body is fine too or even wire wrapped in concentric wraps (no gaps) will make for more weight. Otherwise you need the materials mentioned.
The best variations are color and weight variations to this simple pattern. When you come across an effective and simple pattern like this, best not to add to many variations and keep it simple so you can tie more in less time.
The major benefit to this fly is it’s ease of tying in relation to it’s effectiveness. With only 3 materials, you should be able to tie several different color variations without breaking the bank. A dozen in mixed sizes and colors will go a long way when on the river. Big fish seem to really enjoy this pattern and it works well when stripped as a streamer or dead drifted as a nymph.
This fly is versatile in the way it can be fished. If you keep it without a beadhead, you can add split shot above the fly about 16 inches and it will bounce as it drifts along the bottom, imitating a leech with surprising accuracy.
In addition, you can throw and retrieve it like a streamer with a beadhead or lead wraps on the pattern. This will keep it below the surface and small, short and slow strips will give it a leech-like look and swim pattern that fish really seem to like.
Lastly, you can fish it just like you would a nymph. Strike indicator or euro-style, you can drift this as the first fly with a small midge or baetis below it and have great success. Add split shot or BH weight to the fly itself as needed to for where you fish.
