Tying Video
Zonkers are great searching patterns as they imitate lots of food that trout eat. If you are not sure what to throw this is a good option to tie on. Zonker strips are wildly popular for streamer patterns for one reason: they catch fish. Keep these in your box with a few colors, black, white, and olive specifically. Ice dubbing is a great material because you can build bulk without adding much weight to the fly.
This fly is pretty heavy so it is able to get deep. Use that to your benefit and get the fly to the bottom. Zonkers are great to use under an indicator as well. Fish it as a nymph deep through runs to pick up some large trout stuck to the bottom. When stripping the fly use a short quick pop or a long slow retrieve. Vary between these retrieval methods until you catch a fish, then continue using that method. Trout will key in on baitfish when there are no hatches to provide a food source but you can use these year ’round. Trout will almost always take an easy meaty snack like the zonker.
If you are using these for bass you can fish them year around. These make fantastic minnow patterns. Keep these near logs, stumps, and cuts to entice smallmouth out of their hidey-holes.
