This is a specific pattern to imitate little black stoneflies and no variations are available without changing the purpose of the fly.

It’s a simple tie once you learn the basics and does a remarkable job imitating a the early season little black stones that often confuse anglers trying to catch fish that are sporadically rising in the early season. It sits low on the surface and has a delicate profile making it a little hard to maintain but worth the effort to accurately imitate LBS.

During the early season, we often see fish rising sporadically and aggressively to something in the water but we throw midge and BWO expecting that’s the ticket since it is 90% of the time.  However, looking around on the banks or seeing them fly in the air, you can often see little black stones and tying on one of these can be a excellent choice.

It’s best to fish this with 2 flies, one being more visible and unsinkable so you can use it to track your fly as this often sinks and rides low making it hard to see.  A front fly that is used primarily as an indicator really helps as you fish this fly.
