Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig nymph hook size #18
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 2.5mm black nickel
  • Thread: Veevus GSP 30 denier white
  • Body: Veevus body quill BQ13 or yellow amber covered in clear fluorescent UV cure resin
  • Rib: Spanflex brown
  • Thorax: Hemmingway’s peacock dubbing UV brown
  • Hook: Use any standard nymph hook for this pattern. It can be jigged or not.
  • Bead: If tying this fly on a jig hook, slotted beads are required. If not, standard beads are fine.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work great with this. The thinner the better, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Body: Feel free to use just a thread body if using colored thread.
  • Rib: This is what makes this fly stand out from all the other midge patterns out there. If you don’t have span-flex or flexi floss, try some small sized rubber legs.
  • Thorax: Use your favorite short fibered dubbing!

With this fly being so small and with already a lot going on with this fly, there is not much room to add materials. If you want a little bit of flash however, a few strands of krystal flash cut short as a tail might not be a bad idea. As always feel free to tie this up in any color that you like.

This is a quirky little midge fly that is quite a bit different than most other midge patterns with the flexi floss rib. The jig hardware also allows this fly to be a point fly on a technical winter euro rig, or an effective dropper off of a lead fly in an indicator rig, or even off the back of a dry fly.

This fly can be fished anywhere on a nymph rig or as a technical dropper on a dry dropper. The jig hardware allows this fly to be both a point and a tag on a euro rig, or indicator rig for those technical winter days. Fish this fly with the best dead drift for best results.
