Tying Video
Changing colors while sticking to this pattern design will allow you to tie any mayfly in a traditional catskill design. Match the hackle to the dubbing to keep with a proper mayfly appearance regardless of which color you choose.
A catskill styled dry fly is more of a historical value than any superiority over more modern patterns, but it has a certain magic to it given the history of dry flies in the catskill river regions. The benefit of this fly is it’s portions and profile on the water. It’s as good as any pattern in imitating an adult mayfly and purists from anywhere, can’t argue with this fly and it’s use.
Standard dry fly fishing is the best approach with this fly. A single or two dry fly set up is best and fishing an emerger or cripple pattern behind this pattern helps cover your bases a bit more in case they aren’t taking the adults with much tenacity. I always prefer to make this the first fly on my line if fishing multiple flies.
