Tying Video
The subtle rise of a trout on a midge pattern is a beautiful sight for the fly fisherman. This pattern is the perfect option for these scenarios, and is easy to tie. Luckily it also has a fair amount of substitution options that won’t affect the way it fishes.
Tail: Any Zelon equivalent, such as Antron in a similar color, will get the job done well.
Wing: Again, any Zelon equivalent, such as Antron in a similar color, will get the job done well.
Thorax: Superfine Dubbing is a wonderful stand in material.
This bug can be tied in a plethora of colors, and sizes. Both variations are highly advised. Some solid color options are black, olive, brown, red, and tan. As far as sizes go, 18-24 is a pretty good range to stick with. Try this bug out, you won’t be disappointed!
An easy choice for the tier, and the fish! Matthew’s Zelon Midge is one of those flies you can tie half asleep at 5am, or after one too many at 5pm. Even though it’s a simple tie, there is no compromise on fish catching ability. If the midges are popping off a fish would be hard pressed to pass up this little guy as it drifted by. Tie up a few sizes, and colors, and give it a go!
Fishing this bug alone will be the most productive method most of the time. With less picky fish you can put a bigger, more visible dry in front of it for a great double dry fly rig. Stealthy presentations, and drag free drifts will get you lots of eats!
